This picture of wild roses may look very pleasant and peaceful, but Van Gogh was suffering from a serious psychological crisis at the time. Van Gogh painted the delicate flowers in a naturalistic way. But he treated the green leaves differently. He turned them into flat, single-colored surfaces surrounded by heavy blue outlines.
