Black Square and Red Square was created in 1915 during World War I and was originally intended to have no significance. Malevich's work has often been called the "zero point" of painting by historians and critics, referring to the historical significance of the picture and paraphrasing Malevich. The painting was sold for a record sum of $60 million.
