The Persistence of Memory is Salvador Dalí's most famous painting. The work depicts three melted pocket watches arranged in the Catalan countryside against the rugged cliffs of Cap de Creus. A fly sits on one of the watches, symbolizing the passage of time. Another is being eaten by ants, symbolizing transience and decay. In the center of the painting, a clock ticks on an abstract face of the artist, shown in profile, with his eyes closed.
