Edward Hopper - Nighthawks

In this painting, one of the most famous works of art of the twentieth century, three customers, all lost in their own thoughts, sit apart. The viewer, drawn to the light, feels cut off from the scene by a seamless wall of glass. The four lonely and uncommunicative night owls seem as distant and separate from the viewer as they are from each other. Hopper acknowledged that in Nighthawks "I probably unconsciously painted the loneliness of a great city."
