In his own words, Magritte was plagued by a question: how to depict a glass of water in a painting so that it is not indifferent? And after painting the dozens of glass paintings, he came up with a dialectical composition that combines two opposite relationships to water - containing it and repelling it. Magritte called this surreal painting a tribute to the dialectic of Hegel.
