Van Gogh probably had only a small supply of paint left when he painted this picture in Saint-Rémy. He had also run out of canvas, so he used diluted oil paint on cardboard for this view of the asylum's garden. He had only recently arrived and was not yet allowed to work outside the garden walls. Later he was allowed to draw and paint outside the complex.
