The work, painted in 1884, caused a stir when it was exhibited at the Paris Salon, because Madame Gautreau's very low-cut dress and very white skin gave an impression of nudity that was considered scandalous, so Singer Sargent changed the title of the painting to Madame X and corrected a strap that originally ran across the arm. Nevertheless, the painting had to be removed from the Salon.
