The recurring theme of the Bathers is clearly classically inspired and aims to represent the dream of a lost unity between man and nature, a mythical harmony that represents the feminine element as a symbol of creative energy and nature as a source of refuge from worries. The three large Bathers that Cézanne worked on in the last years of his life, from 1895 to 1906, are considered his spiritual testament.
